Washing* CAPITAL CLIPBOARD BY EULA N. GREENWOOD THAT SOURCE . . . live awhile in Washington and you become an expert on what goes on at the' White House. Also, on international matters of all sorts. However, there is a solid source at news in Washington. It may be quoted. R has excel lent behind-the-door contacts. It has been correct in the past. Here, for what it may be worth to you, is this insider's report on Vietnam: “The end of the Vietnam con flicts is in sight. This does not mean in 1967, but victory will be well on its way prior to the elections in 1968. Naturally, this statement will be met with denials on the part at the White House. However ... three years ago ... we said that... by the end of 1967 there would be 500,000 U. S. armed troops in Vietnam. This was ridiculed by the Administration. But it proved true.” “There is a new war in Viet nam. U. S. is now playing havoc with Communist morale and production. They are now usings half-million people to repair damages. North Vietnamese morale has cracked! There will be no sudden end to the fighting ... no peace table ... no surrender as we reco gnize it ... but a gradual fading away of the enemy dur ing the winter . . . around January—March." THROUGH THE YEARS? . . . Jimmy Capps, one of the best radio announcers and record players Raleigh has known, died of cancer about a month ago. He was well known here and in Dur ham, had record shows here and there, did special work for Miss Raleigh pageants and nice events of that nature. One of the songs he helped make popular some five years ago told of this man who got on a bus in Boston and rode and rode—forever ... on that city bus in Boston. Go to the bus stations in Rale igh, Durham—perhaps else where in this section—<and list en to the fine voice announc ing bus arrivals and departures. Excellent. No time is given. Just {he words: “Please board your bus. It la now loading on Track Three. This is the bus for Wen dell, Zebulon, Wilson... .Thank you for traveling Trailways." Jimmy Capps still lives at the TInion Bus Station. Few people realize that it is a tape recording made in the spring— and played to fit the arrival and departure of busses. How long the fine voice of the late announ cer will be used, nobody knows —perhaps until it, too, falls by the way somewhere out there in th future. MOONLIGHTERS ...Follow ers of the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest should hope most of their pre-season practice drills will be held under the lights at the campus. Why? Because, of the ten games on their schedule this fall, only three are being played in the daytime. Seven night games! State has three night games. Carolina, one. Duke, one (with Wal e Forest Sept. 16). Both State and Wake have games in Houston’s Astrodome. NO NEW TAXES ... It hasn't been announced yet, but action taken by the last Legis lature is given credit for brib ing at least one new industry to North Carolina. Asked the man reason they were locating in this State, officials are supposed to have said: “Because North Carolina is one of the few states in the entire nation which actually is reducing taxes this year." LONG WEEKENDS . . .Itnow begins to look as if Congress will push through at this session the bill moving five holidays to a Monday, thus providing five long weekends. As has been noted here, nearly everybody is for it. But not everybody. Marion O. Bradwell, executive director of the Lord's Day Alliance of the U. S„ predicts adoption of the bill will affect Sunday School A RAINMAKER BILL Harrisburg, Pa.—A bill that could hold rainmakers liable for damages caused by too much or too little rain has been approved in the Pennsylvania House of Representstlvea. The commer cial cloud seeders will be licensed and post at least a 9600,000 bond. says g. o. p. could 4 and church attendance. The Bap tists’ Biblical Recorder agrees with Bradwell. Weekends away from home . . and the church. They also point to increased highway deaths and injuries that usually accompany long week ends. CLOSE! . . . This college finally landed one of the best football prospects around. But he was so thick-headed. The coach passed the word around to the faculty members... Don’t give him nothing difficult. They ail tried to go along. Math Man could stand it no long er. told the coach so: "I can't do a thing with him ... not a thing." Coach, upset, wanted to know what his boy had done wrong. The instructor said he gave him the problem: two-plus-two. “His answer”, said the teach er, “was six." “Well, that's not so bad, Prof.”, moaned the coach. “He only missed it one.” POVERTY ... It was noted the other day: Bill Shires re ports that po-boy sandwiches at Wake Forest College are now labeled poverty sandwiches. Bill Sharpe in The State has a picture of a unique mountain store along a tourist highway. They poke fun at the Poverty Program by urging travelers on a big sign to stopby.purchasea lot of different things, and “help us poor mountain people.” But the best story has this Red Cross crew finally making it through waist-deep snow to this little cabinfar back inthe moun tains. They knock on the door, announce to the old man who opens It they are from the Red Cross. He turns to his wife: "Mother, where did you put our Red Cross contribution ... we plumb forgot to send it in.” ‘The Kent Shop’ •» CHILDREN’S CLOTHES COKNEB SKI LODGE JtOAD * 3*1 (Blowing Bock) All At Discount Prices NAME BKANDS s CRACKIN' GOOD CANNED Biscuits • PINKY PIG HOT OR MILD PORK Sausage • S"n,39^ • • 39 * SLICED Va.
